Surprise! With 7 calories per gram, beer calories are second only to fat, which has 9 calories per gram.
Our body is strange. It metabolizes the calories in beer first before it burns the fat.
This wouldn't be nice if you wanna lose weight.
A cold beer at a party, at happy hour or on a night by the fireplace - it's a natural second thing to do. But we sometimes forget about the beer calories which do add up fast.
One reason is because in terms of fullness, our body don't register liquids.
You gain weight from beer since you don't compensate by eating less - you still eat the same amount, regardless of whether you have had the drink.
Or sometimes you think if you mix the beer with fruit juices, you'd be OK with the calories. But do you know beer has a diuretic effect on our body?
Even if you mix it with say, orange or cranberry juice, you're more likely to flush the nutrients out of your system.
So, these types of mixed drinks, apart from the calories, have little or no nutritional value.
Look at the Ingredients that make up Beer
Fermented and brewed grains, mostly barley;
Hops (from the hop plant, related to hemp) which gives beer its distinctive bitterness; and
Malt
Beer ranges from light ales to dark stouts, going according to the proportions of malt and barley in it. A rule of thumb is that the darker the color of the beer, the higher the calories.
1 regular 12-ounce beer has 13 grams of carbohydrate and contains 150 calories while 1 regular 12-ounce light beer has 5 grams of carbohydrates and contains 100 calories.
1.5 ounces vodka, 4 ounces cranberry juice - 172 calories
Margarita on the rocks (1.5 ounces tequila, 1 ounce Triple Sec, 1 ounce fresh lime juice) - 182 calories
Long Island iced tea (3/4 ounce each tequila, rum, gin and vodka; 1/2 ounce Triple Sec; splash of lemon juice and cola - 275 calories
If you're dying hard for Beer, then drink one that has less Alcohol Content
Maybe you think light beer is low in beer calories? Hey, you do see above that it has 100 calories? It isn't like you drink a diet soda, you know, that has zero calories.....
If you really want beer, then drink one that contains a little bit less alcohol (yes, alcohol has lots of calories....) or a non-alcoholic beer, which has 65 calories in a 12-ounce bottle.
Let's face it. Beer calories aren't associated with a beautiful body or a 6-pack abs or a slender you.
You know now how many calories there are in that beer you're chugging.
If you aim to lose weight, then watch out for the calories in it!
