Body Mass Index Calculation Is More Accurate In Gauging Your Weight Than Your Good, Old Bathroom Scale!

How Accurate?

Let's see:

First, body mass index calculation takes into account your weight and height to gauge your total body fat.

Second, it takes into account your body fat composition.

These 2 combined would give indication whether you're underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese......

Before you jump into the index calculation, I think it's helpful to know what's your body fat composition.

Body fat composition, simply put, is the percentage of body fat you've in relation to your muscle mass.

It's like asking you: how "fat" are you? Erm...The "real", actual fat you've in your body?

To answer this, let's check out your weight on your bathroom scale after you've started toning exercise .

Have you noticed that you've actually gained slightly in weight?

Don't panic.

This is because as you tone and build muscles, the muscles you gain weigh more than fat. You gain weight not because of an increase in body fat, but because you've muscles now and they weigh more than fat.

Your bathroom scale will not be able to separate the weight of your muscles and bones from your fat.

So body mass index comes to the rescue. It's a more accurate measure that takes into account your weight and height to gauge your total body fat.

Calculating Body Mass Index

You and I can determine our body fat composition based on simple body mass index calculation.

It's an easy and simple calculation.

Let's do it now.......

Step 1: Take your body weight, divide it by 2.2.

For e.g. if your weight is 150 lbs., convert it to kilograms (kg) by dividing it by 2.2

So, 150 lbs/2.2 = 68.18 kg

Step 2: Next take your height in inches, divide it by 39.4

For e.g. if your height is 5' 10"

so, 5" 10" is 70 inches/39.4 = 1.77

Step 3: Multiply your answer from Step 2 by itself.

For e.g. 1.77 x 1.77 = 3.14

Step 4: Divide the number from Step 1 by the number from Step 3.

For e.g. 68.18/3.14 = 21.71

Your body mass index is 21.71

What does this number mean?

It means that your weight is in the healthy range and you're not obese (or fat).

The body mass index determines your weight, in the following range:

  • Below 18.5 Underweight
  • 18.5 - 24.9 Normal
  • 25 - 29.9 Overweight
  • 30 & Above Obese

A Good Guide for Weight Loss

Body mass index calculation can be used to gauge your body mass index for weight loss.

However, I want to say this - don't be obsessed with the index. Use it to jump start a healthy and safe weight loss program.

And use it as a guideline to gauge your weight.

Nothing more than that.

Do your exercise and eat a healthy diet , and you're sure to score in "healthy" range in your body mass index.

That's the "results" you should be looking at.
