Calories Burned Swimming? Do you know swimming burns lots of calories, anywhere from 500-650 per hour? Depending on how efficient you swim, how hard you swim and how buoyant you're (the more body fat you've, the more you float and the fewer calories it takes to swim)? Research shows that swimming, no matter what strokes you use, burns about 89% of the calories burned during running and 97% of the calories burned during cycling, for the same exercise duration. Actually, how many calories you burned boils down to the intensity of this exercise....Obviously the harder you work, the more calories you burn. And so it's really possible you burn more calories swimming than running in the same duration as long as you swim hard enough. And of course the heavier you weigh, the more mass you've to pull through the water and so the more calories you'll burn per minute. As an example: If you weigh 150 lb, swim hard for 60 minutes, you'll burn about 700 calories. If you weigh 130 lbs, swim with light intensity for 60 minutes, you'll burn about 470 calories.
The message I want to drum into you is this - body weight matters in how many calories you burned when you swim....
Besides the huge number of calories burned, swimming is great as it:
