Calories Burned Walking

If you walk at a brisk pace, you burn 4 calories per minute or about 120 calories in 30 minutes.

Imagine, you go for a brisk 30-minute walk everyday. You'll get to burn about 43,800 calories in a year!

If your eating habits remain unchanged, you'll shed about 12.5 lbs in a year.

Cut your calories, you'll shed even more.......

That's for brisk pace walking.

What if you do slow, moderate, very brisk pace walk or do uphill walk at a brisk pace? How many calories you burned walking at these various levels of intensity?

Here's how they pan out, based on a 30-minute walk:

  • Walk at a slow pace (2.0 to 2.5 mph) on a flat surface - you burn 90 calories (3 calories per minute)
  • Walk at a slow to moderate pace (3.0 mph) on a flat surface - you burn 105 calories (3.5 calories per minute)
  • Walk at a very, very brisk pace (4.5 mph) on a flat surface - you burn 135 calories (4.5 calories per minute)
  • Walk uphill at a brisk pace (3.5 mph) - you burn 180 calories (6 calories per minute)
  • (Note: mph = miles per hour)

You do see this Pattern, I Hope?

That the number of calories burned walking depend on how fast (speed) is your walking, your body weight and how long the time taken to walk.

Take speed.

If you walk at a very fast speed, you force your body to move in ways it isn't accustomed to move. This creates a great deal of internal "friction", which boosts your heart rate, oxygen consumption and calories burned.

If you walk at 5 mph or even faster than this, you burn more calories than when you run, at the same speed.

In other words, the number of calories you burned walking fast are more than the calories you burned running, at the same speed.

You also cover more miles in shorter time. Distance counts a lot in walking because it helps to build up your strength and endurance.

Go for a fast 30-minute walk everyday. It's an excellent exercise that builds cardiovascular fitness, strengthens bones and as you can see, burns lots of calories.
