Calories In Alcohol Are High
But Good If Consumed In Moderation

Calories in Alcohol are High

You store the excess calories as fat.

Alcohol is alcohol. That's why we've got the infamous "beer belly" - too much alcohol in the body and a result of alcohol's complex effects on your body's metabolic system.

Alcohol reduces your body's ability to burn off fat for energy. When you drink alcohol, only a small portion of it is converted into fat. The liver converts the rest of the alcohol into acetate.

Your body then releases the acetate into the bloodstream and replaces fat as a source of fuel.

Coupled with the high calories in alcohol, the resulting effect is that your body will now have to store the excess amount of unburned fat, usually in the form of a "beer belly".......

Consume Alcohol in Moderation

Granted that calories in alcohol are high, that doesn't mean you can't drink beer or wine or any other alcoholic beverages.

Research reveals that a moderate consumption of alcohol is good for your health.

Of course, heavy drinking is a no-no thing as it brings with it cirrhosis of the liver, breast cancer, and other health problems.

The key word is moderation.

What's moderation then?

Well, it's something like 2 drinks a day for men and 1 drink a day for women. You can't "saved" over time and then drink all in one day!

1 drink is:

  • A 12-ounce bottle or can of regular beer
  • A 5-ounce glass of dinner wine with a shot of liquor or spirits (either straight or in a mixed drink)

It’s not what you drink, it’s how much you drink that counts. If you choose to drink, drink moderately and responsibly.

I want to clear a misconception here. That light beer is like diet coke - free of calorie and fat.

N-o-o-o-o.....

Yes, it does contain fewer calories than the regular beer, but a 12-ounce can of light beer still contains 100 or more calories (a regular beer of same size contains 150 calories).

See more fact of calories in beer here.

So, don't chug down as many cans of light beers as you want.

The calories in this light type are not "light". If you drink cans of it, the calories stack up.

Tips for you

I've got some tips here to help you reduce the calories in alcohol:

  • Go for low calorie/diet mixers where ever you can
  • Make your wine into a spritzer (a longer drink) or your lager into a shandy - both have fewer calories
  • Alternates alcoholic drinks with low calorie non-alcoholic drinks or water
  • Work your alcohol into your daily calorie quota so you can enjoy a glass or two
  • Don't skip meals to make room for drinks, as alcohol won't satisfy your hunger. In fact, alcohol lowers your blood sugar levels.

A drop in blood sugar levels sends signals to the brain you're hungry. With alcohol in your system, willpower can go out of whack and the food binges kick in.

Eat a proper meal to line your stomach and to slow the rate at which alcohol absorbs into your bloodstream, to keep you in control of how much you eat and drink

Alcohol Slows Down Metabolism, so Watch it!

Calories in alcohol are high. And alcohol reduces your metabolic rate.

The best is to drink in moderation - you keep the calories low, experience better health and who knows, longer life even.....
