How Many Calories in Coffee? Very few, in fact, if you drink it black. Per USDA (US Department of Agriculture), an 8-ounce cup of coffee (brewed from grounds) has only 2 calories! (Note: The calories actually come from a small amount of protein and some mono-unsaturated oils) The truth about coffee is - coffee beans + water = virtually zero calories. And drinking coffee by itself is healthy as it contains antioxidants that fight free radicals in your body. "Trouble" and more precisely, calories, increase like crazy when you go from drinking the basic black to flavored, whipped, topped, iced or even frozen versions, with all the "extras" and "goodies" throw in! Calories in coffee of these so-called "branded" kinds are staggeringly high due to the calories of extras and goodies added to them. Extras? Yeah, sugar, cream, milk, syrup, soy which are high-calorie stuff. Goodies? Whoa! Toppings and floats like ice cream, nuts, biscuit pieces, snows, sugared concoctions......
Shoot up from virtually zero calories to, urm.....you know......
(Note: The above is based on a 12-ounce cup) You get the picture? The more fancy or the longer the name of your coffee, the more you've to "pay" in terms of calories......
(Note: You use non-dairy creamers in your coffee? Still, they contain calories, as you can see from above.....)
I know you love those "branded" coffees from Starbucks, Coffee Bean, San Francisco........ Well, they taste nice but the calories in coffees from these so-called coffee "experts" are hilariously high! Let's see how the calories in Starbucks coffees panned out: (Based on a 16-ounce cup)
Simple. Go for coffee that's with non-fat or skimmed milk. Skip the whipped cream on top. And always drink the smallest size. Shhh...You can cut down that caffé mocha to 170 calories..... Or better still, make your own iced coffee by mixing coffee, ice, skim milk, cocoa powder or cinnamon and a packet or two of sugar-free sweetener. So the bottom line is that if you're watching the calories in coffee, cut down or cut out the extras you put in your coffee. You remove a real good amount of calories from your coffees. And enjoy a nicely brewed coffee too! Bookmark this page? Click one of the little buttons below and you're done. Back to top
