Effect Of Exercise On Depression.......... Exercise Makes A Difference...............

Effect of Exercise on Depression - what's the Deal?

Well, if you're an exerciser, you'll have better self-esteem and fewer mental health problems.

First thing, if you exercise regularly, depression should by right, not come near you.....

I'm not saying that you don't get depressed, but psychologically speaking (aren't I a pain now?), you should be a whole lot better than those non-exercisers.......

Second thing, if you exercise regularly, your chance of slipping back into a dark hole of depression (if you already have the depression) should well, very much "not there" !!!

Depression can happen to anyone - exerciser, non-exerciser.

But do you see exercise makes the difference between the two?

This is where you can appreciate the effect of exercise on depression and how exercise can help to decrease the negative aspects of depression.

In fact, many, many studies have proved that exercise is helpful in decreasing depression.

This is because exercise:

  • Increases your sense of mastery which can help you if you don't feel in control of your life and mood
  • Improves your body's health, which can help lift your mood
  • Elevates your self-esteem
  • Provides a distraction from your worries
  • Helps you sleep better . When you're depressed, usually you're plagued with problem of insomnia
  • Helps you get rid of those bottled-up stress and frustration

Whenever I feel down (hey, I do feel down at times, even though I exercise regularly! What to do, sometimes things in life are beyond my control....), I always find solace in a bout of exercise - cardios , toning exercise , stretching and strength training

OK, OK. I know you're saying that's enough.

I get the message.

Let's move on to see....

The effect of exercise on depression and how you can exercise to lessen effect of depression.

What is the Effect of Exercise on Depression?

Many published studies support the belief that exercise is proven effective in improving and or decreasing depression.

This is because exercise tends to enhance your self-confidence and also provides a sense of accomplishment and mastery, which in turn would elevate your overall outlook in life.

Exercise also provides a more grounded perspective on life as through exercise, you've a better self-esteem and a positive self-confidence to "plant" you unto solid ground.

When exercising, you're focusing your mind and body on a rhythmic activity, which veers you away from your worries. Plus exercise releases your stress and tension too.

This combination makes you more relaxed and alert and, therefore, better able to deal with your problems.

Exercise is said to affect your brain's neurotransmitters - beta-endorphins and serotonin.

When you exercise, your beta-endorphins is increased and this causes you in a state of euphoria.

Serotonin, on the other hand, is a chemical in your brain that has been proved linked to your mood. A good workout can boost your level of serotonin, hence your mood.

Do you now see how exercise works and the effect of exercise on depression?

Effect of Exercise on Depression - how can you Exercise to alleviate Depression?

First off, even if you feel down and out, it's still good for you to get up and move about, doing some light exercises as they'll help you to work off the spell of depression hanging around you.

Second thing is to set simple goal - just start off with walking around in your house, in your garden, say 3 times a day. Add more the next day and thereafter, more until you're comfortable with the routine.

Thirdly, go easy on yourself. You might not be able to do lots of exercises, but try to feel good about what you CAN do. Don't sweat it!

The fourth thing is to do the exercise you enjoy. If Pilates is your favorite exercise and you feel good doing it, then by all means indulge in it. If you enjoy walking, put on your shoes and out you go for an enjoyable walk!

Fifthly, get a friend or partner to exercise with you. Working out with a friend or partner can boost up your enthusiasm and remind you that you're not alone.

Better still, if you could participate in group exercise, go ahead.

You'll feel so much better afterward as you're placed in an environment where it's more likely that you'll interact with others. The interaction in itself offers a therapeutic effect for you.

The sixth thing, go outside as even a little sunshine and fresh air can help elevate your mood and "lightened" your head.

The last is work with your doctor. Talk to him or her about your options regarding treatment and your plan to exercise. He or she may refer you to a trainer who can help you plan an exercise program that suits you.

As you exercise, you'll find your mood, outlook and perspective change for the better. You'll feel more energetic, more lively and more upbeat about yourself.

Effect of Exercise on Depression - What Exercise is Best?

I would say any type of exercise helps.

Cardio workout, toning, strength training or stretching are good exercises to do.

These exercises trigger positive effects on your mind and you'll automatically attune to the changes - better, positive perspective on life.

Whatever exercise you do, continue on. Don't give up.

And in no time, you'll shrug off the "gloom" and "doom" feeling and charge on in life....

By the way, depression can hit anyone at any time, so just look out for these signs so that you're early and quick dealing with them:
