What's my take on the subject of exercise and the brain?
I know exercise boosts my brain function, tones my neural connections and shapes up my memory and learning. Cool, huh?
Exercise and its effect on your brain, hmmm.....big topic to talk about, really. Well, let's take it real easy and we'll get to the bottom of everything regarding exercise and your brain. And my brain too.
Recent study on positive benefits of exercise shows that exercise has a more powerful impact on your brain than previously thought. It finds strong evidence that if you do cardio exericise - even a fairly gentle one - it may boost performance in key areas of your brain. The study suggests that it's possible that improved blood flow to your brain during exercise may be partly responsible, or that exercise stimulates the release of chemicals that influence your brain cell growth and activity, thereby boosting brain function, toning neural connections and shaping up your memory and learning. It could improve your "decision-making" and "focus" too. Another study reveals that joggers consistently performed better than non-joggers in learning and memory tests that required the use of their prefrontal cortex. (Note: This is an area of your brain that's located behind your forehead and is known for its ability to carry out complex functions like learning and memory). These studies also suggest that exercise positively affects the "hippocampus", a sea-horse shaped brain structure that's vital for your memory and learning. I've always enjoyed good memory and quick learning and I think I would like to attribute these 2 precious skills to the fact that I exercise regularly......
Toning exercise , cardios, strength training , stretching and Pilates are my passion and love! You can say that these 2 skills are in born in me, but you know inborn skills can get a little bit "rusty" as you age..... You do hear of murmurings like these: "I'm getting old, my memory is failing me"; "Excuse an old lady for her slow learning"? So there. I would say exercise does have positive effect on your brain.
Walking is really, really good for your brain because it improves your brain's mechanism, increases blood circulation and the oxygen and glucose that reach your brain. It's not strenuous, so your leg muscles don't take up extra oxygen and glucose like they do in other forms of exercises. As you walk, you effectively oxygenate your brain.
Maybe this is why walking can "clear my head" and help me think better. Studies on older people who walk regularly showed significant improvement in their memory skills compared to sedentary older people.
Walking also improved their learning ability, concentration, and abstract reasoning. The risk of stroke was cut by 57% in people who walked as little as 20 minutes a day. When the cognitive abilities of older women were compared, those who walked regularly were less likely to experience age-related memory loss and other declines in mental function. It was found that for every extra mile walked per week, there was a 13% less chance of cognitive decline. And you don't need to be running marathons! The truth is that even a little bit of walking is good for your brain but of course more is better.
