Exercises With Dumbbells Train Each Of Your Arm Independently
The Beautiful Thing about Exercises with Dumbbells
Quickly I know the strength imbalances between the right and left sides of my body!
I'm sure you're curious. How in the world would you know there are strength imbalances?
Well, when you do the dumbbell workouts, you'll know.
Exercises with dumbbells will let you realize some of these muscular imbalances, so you'll be able to address them.
Then, naturally, you'll want to increase the strength of your non dominant side, right?
Hey, that's a wonderful way to balance out the strength "imbalances" between both sides of your body!
Also, I've discovered that dumbbell exercises are versatile - they allow me more freedom to change my muscle position.
Say when I'm holding dumbbells, I can turn my palms in, or with my palms facing forward, or facing the rear or facing my body.
With one sweep of my hands, I can have 3 separate exercises that work my arms in different ways.
This is a NO No situation say, when you're exercising with a barbell.
Another secret of working with dumbbells, well, not really a secret, but a general finding:
The exercises allow you to use your body in "natural" manner, i.e. they stimulates real-life movements accurately.
This is to say that you're more likely to use your stabilizer muscles properly and to use correct body alignment.
In this way, indirectly, you're using more of your body's muscles.
Let me illustrate this with an example -
Say you're doing arm toning exercises with dumbbells standing up.
You'll target the exercises at your arms, right?
But, at the same time, your body will also use other muscles to maintain your balance, just as it would in your daily body movement.
Before I get you into the exercise routine, remember one important thing i.e. injury can result from improper use of dumbbells.
So keep in mind that you should always do a 3-5 minutes warm up and be careful to do each exercise correctly. In this way, you'll reduce your risk of injury.
The Routine
The dumbbell routine is incorporated in my toning exercise program. You'll find it in:
You'll need dumbbells ranging from 2, 3 and 5 pounds to do all the exercises here
As a general rule of thumb, you should start off using no dumbbells. Then add 2, 3 and 5 pound dumbbells when you're ready for more challenging workout
