Do enough posture exercises, you'll literally "stand out" in a crowd of people - regal, straight, with strength and self-confidence! And you wonder - exercises to improve your posture, do they even exist? Yes, they do. It's just that most exercise programs do not stress on them, they'd rather go for chiseling six pack abs, shaping up arms, packing in tighter butts, sculpting sexier thighs and legs..... They've missed out something very fundamental here. Just simple posture exercises promote good posture for you. Good posture can make you look stunningly impressive - you'll literally "stand out" in regal, straight stance, full of grace and elegance! A good posture enables you to move effortlessly with poise, confidence and fluidity. Your body awareness is stellar, making you a true art in motion!!! That brings me to my Mama who used to remind me to stand up straight. Hey, she's not whiny or anything. She's got good reason to ask me to do that - so that I practise good posture. She could have the common sense then to know that bad posture isn't good for me: I'll be more vulnerable to muscle strain and stiff joints, suffer pain and injury. You know, her reminder paid off. I consciously pay attention to how I stand, walk, sit, relax and sleep. I can say I've pretty good posture to show off, thanks to Mama. That's some little history with my Mama there.....
Before I touch on what exercises to do to improve your posture, here's a little prelim regarding how you can achieve good posture. If you understand this, it's more potent than you doing the actual posture exercises! Basically, you just take note of these 4 things:
Properly aligns your body in a "straight line": stack your ears over shoulders, shoulders over hips and hips over ankles. Your shoulders and hips should be straight and your jaw line should be parallel to the floor. Your toes point straight ahead. Balance is akin to "knowing where your center is". Here's 2 simple steps you can do to have balance in your body: pinpoint your center and then practise finding it in various places in your body. Look out for this "balance" in any posture exercise you do. Simply put, this is when your body proportions are balanced. We've lots of asymmetry rather than symmetry--your right side stronger than your left, you carry excessive weight in your tummy and shoulders, etc..... Find out where's your asymmetry and what causes it and then targets an exercise program that works equally on your strength and flexibility. If you can, engage a trainer who's able to design cross-training program for you.
Very simple. You just need to do exercises that give you a strong back. Why? A strong back reduces your risk of back pain and poor posture. (Note: If you've pain in your back, it may be a sign that something's imbalanced....) It lends good support to your spine and torso, so you can stand up straighter, with less slouch in your entire back. And doing lots of toning exercises for your upper back and lower back help you acquire that strong back! That's all you do! How simple can it be? Bookmark this page?
