No Such Thing as Super Fast Weight Loss! I want to talk about the subject of teen weight loss openly and candidly.....Especially weight loss that promises super fast results. It spells danger! I know lots of you want to lose weight super fast. See these types of e-mail requests I received. Do they resonate to you?
Etc, etc, etc......
First, there's no "magic" way to lose weight fast, very fast, super fast, super super fast!..... Second, there's no "instant" diet - not diet pills; not fad diets; not very-low-calorie diet and not "starvation" diet.... Third, there's no way to lose 10, 20, 30 lbs or whatever amount you want to lose, in say, 3, 5, 7.... days. Fourth, there's no way to hit just on exercise or just on healthy diet alone, to lose the lbs. It's got to be a combination of the two that gives you a balanced approach. That settled. Now I want to say something about the number of lbs you can shed off per week (not per day). Well, the most you can hope for is 1 - 2 lbs, maximum. Why? Because anything more than this amount is unhealthy. Besides losing fat, you could be losing lean body tissue. Lean body tissue isn't only muscle, it's all other tissues in your body. This means you could be losing something from your hair, skin, fingernails, heart and blood vessels. Oh, oh....Not very nice here, huh?
I also realize that teen weight loss has become a "warped" thing in the sense that teens (I hope you aren't one) resort to all the wrong methods to losing weight. These methods not only bring ill health and dire consequences, they cause irreparable damages to your emotional and physical make up. It affects me deeply to see teens resort to developing destructive eating habits or undergoing cosmetic surgery, to solve their weight problems. All because you think you're fat, unworthy or you want to weigh less or more or even look like someone else....after looking at pictures and images of models in magazines, TVs or movies. These perceptions would not be healthy or realistic for you. Most of the images and pictures are misleading pieces, preying on you who are desperate for an easy solution. Don't fall into this trap. Develop a healthy self image for yourself and be in control of your life!
I think I've touched all the thorny issues about weight loss which I want to make clear to you. Now, are you ready for some teen weight loss wisdom? They are very simple and practical stuff.
I'm strongly against teen weight loss program that is based on starvation diet. This is a diet that literally asks you to "starve" or eat very little calories a day. It's extremely unhealthy and possibly dangerous if you continue on for a long time. It's a paradoxical situation, meaning instead of losing weight, you would be gaining weight. In the initial stage, you would lose weight fast but after that, the very little calories you eat will prompt your body to think that you're facing "starvation", hence it slows down your metabolism in order to conserve energy (calories), so as to prepare you to face "starvation". (P/S: Our body is "intelligent" enough!) You won't burn off fat as efficient as before. The result? You know it! Plus, you also feel tired, listless and lethargic as a result of not eating enough calories. And then the hunger, cravings and the depressed mood could trigger you to start an episode of binge eating . Worse, since you couldn't lose weight further or you find it hard to lose even a pound, it's more than enough to demotivate you. You quit and would most likely get into overeating. If you repeatedly do this - on and then off the diet; on and then off;.....you're actually slowing down your metabolic rate more and more, making you difficult to lose weight. I want to reinforce here that this diet is ineffective because up to 50% of the weight loss is not in the form of fat but lean tissue. This is because since your body is into conserving calories, fat tissue which needs fewer calories to burn will get to be conserved rather than muscle tissue, which needs more calories to burn. Therefore, your body retains fat and burns up muscles. A teenage girl needs between 1,800 to 2,000 calories a day and a boy needs between 2,200 and 2,700 calories a day. You need this amount of calories to satisfy the nutritional demands of the intense growth and development taking place in your body. This kind of teen weight loss program (I mean the starvation diet)can lead to serious nutritional deficiencies, with extreme tiredness, bone weakness, skin and hair problems and hormonal imbalances. Worse, it could stunt your growth....
I know I am harsh on the subject of teen weight loss. The reason is - I don't want you to get shortchanged for your health and well-being. I would very much like to see you lose weight the safe and healthy way and most of all, to see you get the results, the permanent ones, to boot. Bookmark this page?
