Answer: Because exercise manages my health and controls my bodyweight......
Why should people exercise?
Big time question......
First, to tackle this question, maybe I should narrow the circle of influence encapsulated in the word "people" here.....
Whenever "people" is mentioned in this page, what I actually mean is this - you and I.
I think it's a lot easier to manage this way......
Can we spin this question from a different angle?
Instead of pounding straight on why should people exercise......
Look at it this way - Why wouldn't people exercise?
You know, people like you and me know exercise is good for us and brings lots of benefits to our bodies, yet we don't exercise?
Why?
Simple really.
We give excuses and not just mere excuses but "star" quality excuses, to fool ourselves that not to exercise is a "privilege", is a good thing, is valid, makes sense even........
That's what I did in the past.
I put in my most convincing excuse of all time: "I don't like to exercise!"
Well, that should quell anybody's intention to make me exercise! I thought.
It did. But did it do any good to my body?
I was suffering the consequence of that "star" quality excuse - overweight, feel sickly most of the time and totally out of shape!
Can you make a guess at other "star" quality excuses you (and I) make not to exercise?
The listed reasons below would sound familiar to you!
Hee....hee....hee....hee.....
Don't have time - for your info, this is another most cited "star" quality excuse!
Don't see the benefits happen right away!
It's not a habit!
Exercise hurts!
It takes time to exercise!
Don't know how to exercise!
Exercise is a waste of time!
I exercise but I still put on weight!So I don't exercise now....
No money to buy all the exercise gears, no money to join a gym, no money to engage a personal trainer....
What's the point, I'm large-boned and big-framed, no matter how much I exercise, I'm still the same size....
Don't see results especially weight loss, so I give up exercise altogether!
Blah...blah...blah...Etc...etc....etc....
Hey, I could go on and on and you'd be amazed at the excuses given not to exercise despite the known benefits and the health exercise bring!
Amazing, huh?
These excuses actually tie back to the question in the beginning - why should people exercise.....
After the full deluge of why wouldn't people exercise, now we flip over the coin to see why should people exercise. This way, it'll make you easier to understand the whys.
I've told you exercise brings lots of benefits. This would be the primo reason propelling you and I and others to exercise.
But, do you know there're other hidden reasons why people should exercise?
This has got to go back to the health guidelines issued by the US government, through the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services....
The guidelines say that at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity or exercise (for simplicity sake, I'm going to just mention "exercise" in place of "physical activity or exercise") is required to reduce the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood.
The primary focus is on the role of exercise in affecting energy balance and body weight.
The guidelines reveal that poor diet and little or no exercise will result in an energy imbalance (i.e. more calories consumed than expended), and these 2 are the culprit factors contributing to the increase in overweight and obesity in most people.
When you hit the 30-minute threshold, you'll maintain a healthy weight and reap health benefits like lowering the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and high blood pressure. This is the minimum requirement.
After that, the amount of exercise you need could climb, depending on your body weight.
If you do 30-minute exercise and still gain weight anyway, you may need as much as 60 minutes a day to combat weight gain, according to the guidelines.
And there's also the recommendation for a 90-minute exercise routine, if you're significantly overweight or you've lost a substantial amount of weight and are seeking to maintain that weight loss in the long term.
You'd wonder, why should people exercise for 90 minutes when they can't even do 30 minutes of exercise?
Well, basically what the guidelines say are these -
30 minutes of exercise a day if you're of normal body weight and just want the health benefits of exercise
60 minutes of exercise a day if you want to control your body weight
90 minutes if you want to lose and sustain body weight
So, you decide which category you're in and exercise accordingly.
Does the above answer your question - why should people exercise?
The message in the guidelines - you need to make time to exercise and find a way to work the recommended amount of exercise into your busy schedule, whether it's 30, 60 or 90 minutes.
Why should people exercise like that? You ask.
No worries there.
Relax! You don't have to do the 30, 60 or 90 routine in one straight go!
You can do it in bits and pieces.
The effects of exercise are cumulative. You do it in bits and pieces and it adds up at the end of the day and meets your targeted threshold.
Do 10 minutes in the morning like walking briskly around your house compound, walk another 10 minutes around your office compound after lunch and finish the last 10 minute after work.
If it's 60 or 90 minutes, break up your exercise time into more bits and pieces. Grab whatever chance present to you to exercise! You'd be surprised that you actually sail through the day and meet the required threshold time........
So when it comes to the call of 30, 60 or 90 minutes of exercise on most days, can you possibly do it?
Yes, if you make it a priority!
One tip - ingrain exercise as part of your lifestyle. It'll then automatically grow in you.
A magic trick, make it into something you'd want to do!
That way, you won't fall off the exercise wagon easily and find it hard to get back on.
You next want to know: "why should people exercise like that?"
Right. You strike the right chord.
I reckon if you take your health seriously and you want to be healthy all your life (including as healthy as ever in your twilight years), then I've answered your question.
You see, exercise doesn't always mean "hard, boring", "dreaded" chore that you've to endure because you've to.....
Choose an exercise or activity you like and enjoy doing and I can say this to you - you'll hardly feel the time, whether it's 30, 60 or 90 minutes!
There're so many exercises and activities out there that're enjoyable and fun to do - swimming, skating, mountain climbing, walking , cycling , dancing, riding.......
I'm sure you can find one that intrigues you and you can enjoy doing?
Don't run away now that you think you may have to do 60 or 90 instead of 30 minutes of exercise.....
Why should people exercise? Remember the answer?
Start with 30 minutes first.
Meet it and see if there's a problem with your weight control. You may find that your weight stabilize or you may lose weight. From here, you decide whether the 60 or 90-minute exercise is right for you.
By now, hopefully, you've come to the full realization why should people exercise?
This flipped side of the coin is the correct rationale for you to exercise.
Are you now ready to get off your couch and get moving?
Exercise!
You'll thank me for this.....
Why should people exercise - it won't be your question anymore because you know it doesn't arise - you need to exercise....
